We are pleased to invite customers to trial ADSL2+ services.
ADSL is the protocols used for carrying broadband service over copper wires. ADSL1 is what is currenty used. ADSL2 is the next generation of the protocol designed to offer more bandwidth (faster speeds). ADSL2+ is better still.
The exchange equipment has to be updated to support ADSL2+, and this is taking place now as part of a roll out thoughout the whole country.
ADSL2+ can sync at up to 24Mb/s as opposed to the current 8Mb/s for ADSL1. Remember the key words up to - the service may be slower, and except for a few people very close to the exchange, it will be slower. The service adapts to the line characteristics. Also 24Mb/s is the ATM rate. With overheads you could be taking nearer 21Mb/s of IP traffic on a 24Mb/s line. Even so, this is way faster than ADSL1.
You need to check your router. Many routers are ADSL2+ capable, but not all. Part of this trial will help us understand which ADSL2+ routers work better. If your router does not do ADSL2+ then you will get ADSL1 service until you upgrade it. We will provide trialists with a free ADSL2+ router if they require it. Reports from customers
The trial has started and customers are testing the service now.
We aim to end the trial 31st July. When the trial ends the plan is that the ADSL2+ is a normal service customers can order and existing customers can migrate to. Depending on the experience of trialists we may be automatically bulk migrating existing Max customers to ADSL2+ from the end of the trial as areas are upgraded - this is not yet decided, and would be free of charge.
Basically it is that lots of components in the trial are new. Our equipment; BT gigabit links to us; ADSL2+ equipment in the exchanges; ordering systems; monitoring systems; even the routers customers use. We are even looking at different tariffs for ADSL2+ which means we need to trial our billing systems.
What this means is that things are slightly more likely to break in some way. It also means we may have more scheduled maintenance work causing the odd planned outage (which we always try to do at convenient times outside normal working hours).
You will be expected to provide feedback on your experiences, and possibly try different routers and equipment during the trial.
We are planning to make it so that triallists will not pay for migrating to the ADSL2+ service. When launched there is likely to be a migration charge for moving to ADSL2+ but this is not yet certain - we would like it to be free.
The trialists will need a new phone line to use the ADSL2+ service - so their existing service is unaffected. We can move existing login to the new line, or provide additional IP addresses and login if you wish.
There are limited trialist places where we can provide a new phone line for the ADSL2+ free of charge (installation and ongoing charges free for the trial period.
Once the trial is over the service can be ceased, free, of the service continued at our normal prices for the service and phone line. You could also opt to have the phone line moved to your choice of provider such as BT Retail.
There is no charge for the trial period.
As this is a separate line, your existing service is not affected and you can change to using it rather tha the trial line at any time.
Customers on the ADSL2+ trial will also be put on our new usage based charging system. This is very similar to the existing system but includes a level of off peak usage per month as well (100GB typically). Given the potentially massive amounts of download possible on a 24Mb/s ADSL link this is a necessary step, but we expect that 100GB is high enough for most people to not even get close.
However, for the trial we will not be charging for the service or usage. We will still operate the billing system as this tests the billing, but we will be crediting the charges. Please be reasonable with bandwidth usage.
Annex-M is a part of the ADSL2+ spec that allows much higher upload. This will not be available at the start of the trial, but we will make it available to trialists as soon as we can. It is likely to be some months later, and probably after the trial is over and ADSL2+ is a normal service.
